MOTOCROSS SPORT INFO & QUESTIONS
GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE SPORT OF MOTOCROSS, REQUIREMENTS:
IS RIDING MOTOCROSS A SPORT? IS MOTOCROSS RIDING EXHAUSTING?
Motocross is an anaerobic sport. The anaerobic threshold is the highest possible physical exertion an athlete can still sustain while maintaining a balance between the production and breakdown of lactate. In anaerobic sports the athlete is above this threshold. The exertion range corresponds to a heart rate of approx. 160–210 beats per minute, which riders reach in motocross. Depending on the track and intensity, the heart rate varies within this range.
HOW LONG DOES A MOTOCROSS RACE LAST?
A motocross race in the world championship lasts 30 min + 2 laps. The length of a motocross race varies by class: for juniors/youngsters a race usually lasts around 10 min + 1 or 2 laps, depending on the federation; at international level in the national championship a race often lasts 25 min + 2 laps. In the past, motocross races at world championship level lasted up to 45 min.
What kind of licence do you need to ride motocross?
You don’t need a driving licence for motocross, because you ride away from public roads on a closed race track. Motocross bikes are not road-legal either, so you should never ride these bikes outside the designated race track. Some motocross tracks require a racing licence or club membership to use the track. For safety reasons, proof of a motocross course may also be required if you don’t have a racing licence.
How much does it cost to ride motocross?
Buying used gear approx. CHF 500, club membership CHF 540 = CHF 1,040 one-off in the first year Then CHF 180 per training session (non-binding).
The costs depend very much on how intensively you do motocross, and on the infrastructure you have (van, workshop, storage room, washing facilities, technical understanding, or whether you have to go to the workshop for every little job, etc.). If you only have little infrastructure, the MX-Academy club option is attractive; if you ride there 10–15 times a year, the rental bike option would result in the following costs:
In the first year, riding 10–15 times incl. buying gear and club membership comes to CHF 2,840 – CHF 3,740 (non-binding)
From the 2nd year, riding 10–15 times costs CHF 1,800 – CHF 2,700 (non-binding).
With your own motorbike and gear, a club training session at MX-Academy incl. track fee and coach costs CHF 80 per session (all prices non-binding, subject to change at any time).
What do you need for motocross riding?
- Proper motocross boots
- Knee guards (or knee brace)
- Motocross trousers, optionally functional underwear with protectors
- Protector jacket with back protector, chest protector, elbow protection and kidney belt
- Motocross gloves
- Motocross helmet
- Motocross goggles
- Optional neck brace, if the back protector and helmet do not protect this area sufficiently
How do I get started in motocross?
How to get started in motocross is a question many newcomers and parents ask. We recommend taking a motocross taster course to see whether the sport lives up to your expectations. It does take some investment if you want to ride motocross, and if after a few rides you find that motocross isn’t for you after all, the investment was unnecessary. Also important: getting into motocross should definitely be done with professional supervision and equipment, otherwise your motocross outing can quickly turn into a disaster.
What does MX stand for / mean?
MX stands for motocross and is often used as an abbreviation. The classes in the world championship are also called MX2 and MXGP, formerly MX1 and MX2. Motocross is also referred to as Moto-X or cross, with Moto-X being used more for freestyle motocross. The terms come mostly from English.
What is a dirt bike?
Dirt bike is also used for motocross, especially in the English-speaking world.
WHERE CAN YOU RIDE MOTOCROSS IN SWITZERLAND?
There are various official motocross tracks in Switzerland. MX-Academy runs its own track in Schlatt (canton of Thurgau), which is used for members, courses and events. Anyone who wants to ride motocross needs either a club membership, a racing licence or proof of a course
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO LEARN MOTOCROSS?
You can learn the basic techniques in a one-day taster course. To ride safely and smoothly, experience shows you need around 10–20 training sessions under professional guidance. Advanced techniques such as jumps require targeted training over months or years.
WHICH MOTOCROSS BIKE IS BEST FOR BEGINNERS?
For beginners, a 125 cc two-stroke or a 250 cc four-stroke is recommended. These bikes deliver their power smoothly, are easier to control and are more forgiving of mistakes. It is important to match the motorbike to your height and riding ability — MX-Academy has various rental bikes available.
CAN WOMEN DO MOTOCROSS TOO?
Absolutely — motocross is just as suitable for women as for men. MX-Academy offers special courses for women. What matters is not strength but technique: with the right riding technique you ride more efficiently and spare your body.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TWO-STROKE AND FOUR-STROKE IN MOTOCROSS?
A two-stroke is lighter, revs higher and has a more direct, explosive power delivery — older technology. A four-stroke is heavier, has more torque and is smoother on the throttle, which makes it easier for beginners to ride. In competition, four-strokes clearly dominate today.
DO YOU NEED A GOOD LEVEL OF FITNESS FOR MOTOCROSS?
Yes — motocross is one of the most physically demanding sports of all. Strength, stamina, coordination and reaction speed are all required at the same time. For leisure riders a normal level of fitness is enough to have fun — as your level rises, so do the fitness requirements.
HOW MUCH DOES A NEW MOTOCROSS BIKE COST?
A new entry-level motocross bike (125–250 cc) costs between CHF 6,000 and CHF 9,000 in Switzerland. High-quality 450 cc race bikes from brands such as Honda, KTM or Yamaha cost between CHF 9,500 and CHF 13,000. Good used bikes are available from CHF 2,000–4,000 (guide prices, non-binding).
HOW OFTEN DOES A MOTOCROSS BIKE NEED SERVICING?
Motocross bikes are used intensively and need regular care. Clean the air filter after every ride, check chain tension and tyre pressure before every training session. Depending on use, the engine is serviced every 10–25 hours of riding — a two-stroke needs more frequent engine maintenance than a four-stroke.
WHAT IS SUPERCROSS AND HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM MOTOCROSS?
Supercross is held in stadiums on artificially built tracks. The jumps are more spectacular, the tracks tighter and technically more demanding than in classic outdoor motocross. Supercross is particularly popular in the USA — the best-known competition is the AMA Supercross Championship.
ARE THERE MOTOCROSS COURSES FOR CORPORATE EVENTS IN SWITZERLAND?
Yes — MX-Academy offers tailor-made corporate and team events. Motocross is ideal as an extraordinary team experience that promotes team spirit, courage and trust. All participants are accompanied by professional coaches; gear and motorbikes are provided.
WHAT IS FREESTYLE MOTOCROSS (FMX)?
Freestyle motocross (FMX) is a discipline in which riders perform spectacular tricks in the air on special courses with ramps and are scored by a jury. Well-known tricks are the backflip, superman or no-hander. FMX requires a very high level of riding skill and has nothing to do with classic racing.
CAN YOU GIVE MOTOCROSS AS A VOUCHER?
Yes — a motocross experience is a very popular and extraordinary gift for birthdays, Christmas or special occasions. MX-Academy offers vouchers for taster courses and training sessions — ideal for adventurous people of all ages from 4.
WHICH MOTOCROSS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE THERE?
The most important motocross world championships are MXGP (450 cc class) and MX2 (250 cc class), organised by the FIM. There are also the WMX (women) and EMX series for youth classes. In the USA, AMA Supercross and AMA Motocross are the most important competitions.
WHAT IS ELECTRIC MOTOCROSS?
Electric motocross is the latest development in motorsport: electrically powered motocross bikes offer instant torque, no exhaust emissions and much quieter operation. Electric motocross is becoming increasingly important, especially for children and in noise-sensitive areas.
CAN YOU RIDE MOTOCROSS IN DUBAI?
Yes — MX-Academy also offers motocross experiences in Dubai. Desert sand, dunes and a special atmosphere make motocross in Dubai an unforgettable adventure. Ideal as an extraordinary experience for travellers or as a special event combined with a stay in Dubai.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MOTOCROSS AND ENDURO FOR BEGINNERS?
For beginners, an enduro bike is often easier to ride because it is smoother on the throttle and road-legal. If, on the other hand, you want to start directly on a race track, you are better off with a motocross taster course. MX-Academy offers both ways in.
WHAT PROTECTIVE GEAR DO YOU NEED FOR MOTOCROSS?
Complete motocross protective gear includes: helmet, goggles, protector jacket with back and chest protection, motocross trousers, knee guards, gloves and motocross boots. A neck brace is recommended as an option. At MX-Academy all the gear can be rented.
CAN YOU TRY MOTOCROSS WITHOUT ANY PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE?
Yes — that’s exactly what MX-Academy’s motocross taster course is for. Without any previous knowledge you can ride motocross for the first time under professional guidance. Bike, gear and coach are included. This way you find out whether the sport lives up to your expectations before you invest.
HOW DO PROFESSIONAL MOTOCROSS RIDERS TRAIN?
Pros train every day — both on the motorbike and physically. Endurance training, strength training (targeted, without forearm hypertrophy), coordination and mental training are part of everyday life. On top of that come regular suspension set-ups and video analyses. At MX-Academy, riders benefit from the knowledge of a 2-time European champion.
IS THERE MOTOCROSS FOR CHILDREN FROM AGE 4 IN SWITZERLAND?
Yes — MX-Academy is one of the few organisations in Switzerland that introduce children to motocross from as young as 4. With specially adapted kids’ bikes, child-friendly lessons and maximum safety, the little ones learn to handle the motorbike in a playful way.
HOW MUCH DOES A MOTOCROSS TASTER COURSE COST IN SWITZERLAND?
A motocross taster course at MX-Academy is the most affordable way to get to know the sport. Bike and protective gear are included. Exact prices and available dates can be found directly in the events calendar on the MX-Academy website.
IS MOTOCROSS ALSO POSSIBLE IN WINTER?
In principle, motocross is done all year round, although winter is more limited due to the weather. In Switzerland the main seasons are spring to autumn. MX-Academy also offers winter training sessions and special offers such as motocross in Dubai — where you can ride all year round in the best weather.
WHAT ARE THE PHYSICAL BENEFITS OF MOTOCROSS AS A SPORT?
Motocross trains endurance, strength, coordination, balance and reaction speed all at once. The whole body is used — from the core muscles to the legs and arms. The sport also promotes mental strength, self-assessment and concentration — ideal as all-round training.
CAN YOU RENT A MOTOCROSS BIKE AT MX-ACADEMY?
Yes — MX-Academy offers bike rental for training sessions and courses. This is particularly attractive for beginners or riders without their own motorbike. This way you can train regularly without having to bear the high purchase costs of your own motocross bike.
WHAT IS A RACING LICENCE AND DO YOU NEED ONE FOR MOTOCROSS IN SWITZERLAND?
A racing licence is an official document from the national motorcycle federations (FMS, SAM) that entitles you to start in official races. It is not strictly necessary for leisure riding and training — however, some tracks require proof of a course or club membership. MX-Academy can help coordinate all the necessary steps.
How old do you have to be to ride motocross?
Children can learn to ride motocross at MX-Academy from age 4.
Which motocross bike is suitable for children?
Here you can see suitable kids’ and beginners’ motocross bikes and more beginner tips: Which motorbike is best for beginners?
How dangerous is motocross riding?
The danger in motocross depends very much on how you do the sport. Complete, proper protective gear and a suitable motorbike are very important when you start. After that, you should also choose the track according to your riding ability. It is very important to learn the right riding techniques step by step under professional instruction, as these techniques build on one another. If, for example, you try to jump without properly mastering the basic riding techniques, the risk is very high and it is only a matter of time before you crash. Because of the rather low speeds, the soft ground and good protective gear, our experience at MX-Academy is that when motocross is done properly, we see significantly fewer injuries than in sports such as skiing or even a casual football tournament. The prerequisite, however, is that you start and practise the sport seriously and under guidance. After all, you don’t go skydiving for the first time without professional supervision either.
When was motocross invented?
At the beginning of the 1900s the first off-road races with motorbikes were held — but at that time still with converted road bikes. Real motocross bikes as they exist today did not yet exist then. In 1913 the first event of the FIM (Fédération Internationale des Clubs Motocyclistes) was held; the FIM is still the world federation of motorcyclists today and the governing body of the motocross and road racing world championships.
What is the difference between motocross and enduro?
The main difference is the motorbike: the enduro bike is road-legal with all the necessary parts such as lights, brake light & indicators, and must comply with the relevant noise regulations. For the motocross bike only the FIM regulations apply. In terms of design, enduro bikes have a larger rotating mass, which makes moving off on a slope easier and the bike much smoother on the throttle, comparable to a road bike. With the motocross bike the focus is on as much power and as direct a throttle response as possible, which is why motocross bikes have more power and less rotating mass than enduro bikes and are correspondingly harder to ride. In terms of riding technique, the basic technique remains the same in both sports, but the special techniques then differ. In motocross, for example, jumping techniques are more important; in enduro, balance techniques such as riding over tree trunks or mastering steep climbs. In enduro competitions, consistency is the decisive factor and races usually last longer than in motocross, which is why enduro is more of an aerobic sport. A motocross race is ridden anaerobically (160–210 bpm) and, depending on the class (juniors – national – international – European – world championship), a race lasts between approx. 12 and 35 minutes.
Can you ride enduro with a motocross bike?
In principle you can ride enduro with a motocross bike, but this is usually not allowed, as a road licence is often required in enduro terrain. The harder suspension and the engine with less flywheel mass make riding enduro with a motocross bike much more demanding for the rider. Conversely, the enduro bike is less suitable for motocross, as it is heavier and more sluggish and its suspension is far too soft for proper motocross riding. If you don’t want to jump and are at beginner level, you can also ride motocross with an enduro bike.
How fast do you ride in motocross?
50 km/h is the maximum average speed allowed at all FIM motocross events. Otherwise more obstacles have to be built in. The top speed, however, can sometimes exceed 100 km/h.
Is motocross an extreme sport?
Yes, motocross is counted among the extreme sports.
How much does a motocross bike weigh?
A modern four-stroke 250 cc motocross bike weighs around 108 kg with a full tank. A 450 cc bike weighs approx. 8 kg more.
Who is the best motocross rider in the world?
These are the best motocross riders in the world: these 3 championships are the most important worldwide, and these riders top the all-time rankings:
- Motocross World Championship: Stefan Everts (B) 10 titles
- AMA Supercross: Jeremy McGrath (USA) 9 titles
- AMA Motocross: Ricky Carmichael (USA) 10 titles
These are the best active motocross riders in the world:
Motocross World Championship: Tim Gajser (SLO), Jeremy Seewer (CH), Antonio Cairoli (ITA), Jorge Prado (ESP), Romain Febvre (F), Jeffrey Herlings (NL), Glen Coldenhoff (NL), and others
AMA SX and MX: Ken Roczen (D), Eli Tomac (USA), Chase Sexton (USA), Cooper Webb (USA), Zach Osborne (USA), Jason Anderson (USA), Marvin Musquin (F), Dylan Ferrandis (F), Adam Cianciarulo (USA), Jeremy Martin (USA) and others
Which muscles are used in motocross?
Motor skills and coordination in motocross: a wide range of muscle groups are used at the same time in motocross. While the rider operates the throttle and front brake with the right hand, they use the clutch with the left hand and the rear brake with the right foot. With the left foot they shift without interrupting power; with the whole body the motocross bike is constantly kept in balance; with the legs, bumps are absorbed if necessary, or the rider’s weight is used to make the suspension rebound, in order to glide optimally over the terrain and achieve maximum grip. In addition, the rider visually scans all track conditions, ruts, grooves and stones and all other riders nearby, has to choose the best line and apply the riding technique required. Often all of this has to happen precisely at the same time, sometimes within tenths of a second.
As physical condition declines, reaction and coordination deteriorate considerably. For these reasons motocross is one of the most demanding and most underestimated sports, in which the rider also needs very good self-assessment and, in races, mental strength.
What is arm pump?
Arm pump in motocross is caused by heavy strain on the forearm muscles: the muscle expands (pumps up) and pressure builds up inside the muscle fascia. The blood then backs up in the muscle, which can no longer be supplied with enough arterial blood. This can lead to the muscle locking up. Precise operation of the controls is no longer possible even at an early stage of arm pump.
What can you do about arm pump?
There are 5 causes of arm pump in motocross:
- Wrong riding technique: the most common cause of arm pump in motocross beginners is wrong riding technique. If you have the right position and guide the MX bike with your legs, there is no need to hold on excessively with your arms. Wrong riding technique therefore inevitably leads to arm pump.
- Poor suspension set-up: especially with advanced riders, a wrong suspension set-up also causes arm pump, in particular the so-called "jimmy" – handlebar shake.
- Unsuitable strength training: a common mistake among motocross riders — if you let the forearm muscles grow through strength training, the muscle has less space in its sheath, the so-called muscle fascia. This causes arm pump more quickly. Especially for strength exercises that involve pulling, motocross riders need to use the right exercises and aids.
- Wrong diet: a lack of minerals, above all magnesium, also makes arm pump set in more quickly.
- Predisposition: the forearm muscle runs in a sheath; if the muscle has too little space in it, arm pump sets in more quickly. This can be improved surgically by cutting the sheath open. However, the first 4 causes should already have been optimised and solved before this invasive measure. At MX-Academy we tackle the causes of arm pump individually for each rider and in this order. Any serious motocross coach should solve the points above before surgery.
How do I ride motocross properly? What is the best way to ride motocross? Motocross jumping technique:
You correct the motorbike in the air by accelerating and braking the rear wheel. As a result of the physical law of inertia, the rotating mass acts on the motocross bike and moves it in the corresponding direction. The front wheel would do the same, but it is not used because it can no longer be accelerated and because the steering head sometimes does not keep the wheel parallel to the motocross bike. This causes the motocross bike to drift sideways. In addition, a locked front wheel is not ideal for landing.
Learning to jump requires the basic standing riding technique.

Motocross jumping techniques (Chris Moeckli)
Motocross at international level:
As you can see, motocross is a very complex and difficult sport. The terrain changes constantly, even during a race. The motocross rider has to adapt constantly to the conditions, which keeps the sport interesting for both hobby riders and pros for a long time. It takes a lot of training and discipline if you want to learn the advanced techniques. In a race at international level, the race distance is around 30 minutes. At a heart rate of 160–210 you have to deliver top physical and mental performance.
Technical understanding and a fine feel for your motocross bike are needed to be successful internationally. With weekly competitions you will certainly sometimes have to start in less than ideal conditions and still make the best of the situation. Being able to cope with defeat and pain is just as much part of the repertoire of a successful motocross rider as ambition and determined will.
Motocross as a school of life:
For these reasons motocross is probably one of the most effective and instructive schools of life you can go through. Children who love two wheels as well as adult men and women can have a lot of joy and fun in the sport if it is done properly. To do motocross properly, you have to practise the right techniques step by step, assess your level correctly and not attempt challenges and jumps for which you do not (yet) have the skills. Information about MX-Academy’s kids motocross school can be found under kids motocross.
Motocross as a school of life – kids motocross

You can make your way via MX-Academy’s motocross team all the way to the official Honda team with sponsorship.
Besides its own motocross track, MX-Academy also runs a motocross shop in order to look after all customers in the best possible way. There you can buy motocross gear and motocross bikes.
